Lunch
£3.50 ($7)

Part of a small, international chain with branches in Brewer Street, Amsterdam, Paris, Madrid, Philadelphia and Barcelona, Maoz offers a cheap and cheerful alternative to the bready delights of Pret and the rapidly growing Eat sandwich operations. Customers order from a short menu centred on wholemeal pitta sandwiches, mostly variations of falafel, humus, aubergine or cheese and available with Belgian chips and drinks, and then dress their sandwich with vegetarian fillings from the salad bar at no extra charge. The small interior provides some seating at tables and the counter. I had falafel in pitta with hummous, and added tahini and chilli sauce as well as small helpings of tomato and other vegetables. I struggled to keep the sandwich together in its little cardboard holder but I thought it was excellent value at just £3.50. Soft drinks or freshly squeezed orange juice bring the top price of a Maoz meal up to £4.80. The falafel was freshly fried and crispy, and in spite of the temptation to overdo it with the salad fillings, I managed to keep mine from slopping out over the counter. Cheap, friendly and relatively healthy informal dining in the heart of Soho - what more could anyone ask.

Pre-theatre drinks
£10 ($15)

This used to be a vegetarian bar and restaurant call Bar Humbug, but according to the website seems to have since converted to a cocktail bar, with no mention of food. I'll keep it here until I can try out another vegetarian venue.

Prices are per head for two-three courses, sharing a bottle of wine or a beer or two where appropriate
